Moldy & Musty Smell with Heat

I have an Amana packaged heat pump that is only a couple years old. When the heat comes on, half way throught the cycle it starts to smell very musty and mildewy. We did not notice this problem during the summer. I have heard of the "dirty sock syndrom", but do not know how to open the unit to clean it out. Any suggestions?
