  We are experiencing the same "err" problem. I tried to go to the nighthawk website to look in the manual and all I am getting is trouble in trying to be able to view the manual. It says I need Adobe acrobat 8 or 9. So I downloaded it and I still can't view the manual. I'm pretty frustrated. How can I actually view the manual.

  Thanks to this site, I was able to read the manual and this is what it says:
  Steady “Err” and flashing dot
  “Chirp” every 30 seconds
  Unit malfunctioning
  Call KIDDE Safety customer
  service at 1-800-880-6788

  After your carbon monoxide alarm is installed and operational, an ERR message is generally caused by one of the following:
  
  1. In the rare event that your alarm malfunctions, it will alert you with a short “chirp” and the red LED will flash once every 30 seconds. If the unit is malfunctioning, you need to push the Test/Reset button, hold it for 5 seconds, then release. If the reset is successful, the display will reset to zero. If it's an actual malfunction, the unit will go back to ERR within 5 minutes. If it does turn out that your alarm is malfunctioning after you reset it, you need to press and hold down the Peak Level button. The ERR message will change to a ERR code (it will start with an E and have two numbers behind it). Once the error code is displayed, call us on our hotline at 1-800-880-6788, provide an agent with the code, and they will assist you further. Please make sure that you have your alarm's model number, date of manufacture, and assembly number (if visible), so you won't have to call back again. Please, read the instructions on how to find your alarm's model number.
  2.
  You may have had a power surge. Perform the same test as noted in number 1 above. If it was just a surge that created the ERR message, the reset will change the display to zero and stay there.
  
  3. Your alarm may have reached its End-of-Life Warning. Seven years after initial power up, this unit will "chirp" every 30 seconds to indicate that it is time to replace the alarm. The unit will not detect CO in this condition. Please replace immediately. See the article on End-of-Life warnings.
